Expressing Willingness and Refusal: Will and Would
To show whether a person or sometimes an inanimate object is willing to do something or refuses to do something, we use the modal verbs will and would.
1. Present & Future Willingness and Refusal
A. Will (Willingness / Offer to Help)
We use will to express instant willingness or an immediate offer to do something in the present or future.
- Structure:
Subject + will + Verb 1 - Example: I will carry those heavy bags for you. (I am willing to help).
- Example: “Who can clean the board?” → “I will do it!”
B. Won’t / Will Not (Present Refusal)
We use won’t when someone strongly refuses to do an action. We can also use it for machines or objects that do not work as they are supposed to.
- Structure:
Subject + won't + Verb 1 - Example: He is angry; he won’t talk to anyone. (He refuses to talk).
- Example: The car won’t start. I think the battery is dead. (The car “refuses” to start).
2. Past Willingness and Refusal
To express willingness or refusal that occurred in the past, we use would and wouldn’t.
A. Would (Past Willingness / Intent)
Would describes a past willingness or readiness to do something.
- Structure:
Subject + would + Verb 1 - Example: In times of trouble, my old friend would always stand by me. (He was willing to support me).
B. Wouldn’t / Would Not (Past Refusal)
We use wouldn’t to show that someone (or something) refused to do an action in the past.
- Structure:
Subject + wouldn't + Verb 1 - Example: I knocked on the door, but she wouldn’t open it. (She refused to open it).
- Example: I tried to fix the computer, but it wouldn’t turn on. (The computer “refused” to turn on yesterday).
3. Willingness Summary Grid
| Timeframe | Positive (Willingness) | Negative (Refusal) |
|---|---|---|
| Present / Future | will (I will help) | won’t (He won’t listen / The door won’t open) |
| Past | would (They would cooperate) | wouldn’t (She wouldn’t talk / The engine wouldn’t start) |
Next, we will explore Habits & Typical Behavior to see how modals are used to describe routines and repeated actions in the past and present.
