Simple Sentences
A simple sentence is the most basic sentence structure in English. Despite its name, a simple sentence does not have to be short or simple in meaning; its classification is purely based on its grammatical construction.
1. Grammatical Definition
A simple sentence contains exactly one independent clause. This means it has a subject and a verb, and it expresses a single, complete thought.
Formula: 1 Independent Clause = Subject + Verb (+ Object / Complement)
- The train arrived. (Subject: The train, Verb: arrived).
- She is reading a novel. (Subject: She, Verb: is reading, Object: a novel).
2. Compound Subjects and Verbs in Simple Sentences
A simple sentence can have more than one noun as the subject, or more than one action as the verb, and still remain a simple sentence. As long as there is only one main clause, it is simple.
A. Compound Subject (Two or more subjects sharing the same verb)
- Sarah and John went to the park.
- The cat and the dog slept peacefully on the rug.
B. Compound Verb (One subject performing two or more actions)
- The dog barked and ran away.
- The children laughed and played in the garden.
C. Both Compound Subject and Verb
- Sarah and John ordered pizza and watched a movie.
- The chef prepared and served the meal with a smile.
3. Adding Modifiers and Phrases
You can make a simple sentence very long by adding adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. Even with these additions, the sentence is still grammatically “simple” because it contains only one clause.
- Short simple sentence: We walked.
- Long simple sentence: We walked slowly through the crowded streets of the city after dinner.
- Explanation: The subject is still We and the verb is walked. All other words are prepositional phrases and adverbs modifying the action. There are no additional clauses.
