Past Continuous Tense

The Past Continuous Tense also known as the Past Progressive is used to describe actions that were ongoing or actively in progress at a specific point or period in the past.

1. Grammatical Formulas (Positive Statements Only)

A. Verbal Sentence Formula

Used when the subject was in the process of performing an action in the past.

  • Formula: Subject + was/were + Verb-ing + Object / Complement

Subject-Verb Agreement:

  • Use was with singular subjects (I, he, she, it, or singular nouns).

  • Use were with plural subjects (you, we, they, or plural nouns).

Used when we want to state exactly what action was underway at a particular moment in the past.

2. Ongoing Action Interrupted by Another (Shorter) Action

Used when a continuous past action was interrupted by a sudden, shorter event. The ongoing action is in the Past Continuous, while the interrupting action is in the Simple Past.

3. Parallel Actions Occurring Simultaneously

Used when two or more actions were happening at the exact same time in the past.

Used in narrative writing to describe the background scene or atmosphere before the main events of a story begin.

5. Annoying and Repeated Past Habits (with “always”)

Used to describe a habit in the past that was repetitive and irritated the speaker.
