Numeral Determiners

In English grammar, numeral determiners are numbers that are placed before nouns to specify the exact quantity or the specific order/rank of those nouns.

Numbers can serve different roles in a sentence, but when they appear directly before a noun to clarify its quantity or position, they act as determiners.

1. Cardinal Numbers (Quantity)

Cardinal numbers (one, two, three, four, ten, a hundred, etc.) function as determiners by stating the exact number of nouns.

  • Rule for “One”: Always paired with a singular countable noun.
    • I have one brother.
  • Rule for “Two” and above: Always paired with plural countable nouns.
    • She bought three apples.
    • There are fifty workers in the building.

2. Ordinal Numbers (Order or Sequence)

Ordinal numbers (first, second, third, fourth, last, etc.) function as determiners by showing the position, rank, or order of a noun in a sequence.

Rule: Ordinal determiners are almost always preceded by another determiner, most commonly the definite article the, or a possessive determiner.

  • This is the first time I have visited Bali.
  • Today is her twelfth birthday.
  • He took the last train home.

Combining Numerals with Other Determiners

When constructing a noun phrase, different classes of determiners must appear in a specific order:

  1. Possessive / Article / Demonstrative comes first.
  2. Ordinal Number comes second.
  3. Cardinal Number comes third.
  4. Noun comes last.

Structure: Article/Possessive + Ordinal + Cardinal + Noun

  • My first two attempts failed. (Possessive: My, Ordinal: first, Cardinal: two, Noun: attempts).
  • The last three pages of the book are missing.
