Past Future Continuous Tense

The Past Future Continuous Tense also called the Past Future Progressive or Conditional Continuous is used to describe actions that would be actively in progress at a specific time in the past under certain circumstances, or ongoing actions that were expected in reported speech.

Used to describe active ongoing processes in hypothetical or past-future contexts.

Used in the main clause of Type 2 Conditional sentences when we want to express what ongoing action we would be doing right now if our current reality were different.

  • If it weren’t raining, the children would be playing outside.

2. Reported Speech (Future Continuous in the Past)

Used in indirect speech when reporting a statement that originally used the Future Continuous tense (will be doing).

  • Direct Speech: “At 8:00 PM tomorrow, I will be flying to Tokyo,” said Leo.
