Kalimat Pasif pada Past Tenses

1. Pasif pada Simple Past Tense#

Kita menggunakan bentuk pasif simple past untuk menjelaskan peristiwa yang sudah selesai sepenuhnya pada waktu spesifik tertentu di masa lampau.

Rumus: Subject + was/were + Verb 3 (Past Participle) + ...

• Aktif: Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928.
  • Pasif: Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928.
    Penisilin ditemukan oleh Alexander Fleming pada tahun 1928.
• Aktif: They built this house fifty years ago.
  • Pasif: This house was built fifty years ago.
    Rumah ini dibangun lima puluh tahun yang lalu.

2. Pasif pada Past Continuous Tense#

Kita menggunakan bentuk pasif past continuous untuk menjelaskan tindakan yang sedang berlangsung pada titik waktu tertentu di masa lampau.

Rumus: Subject + was/were + being + Verb 3 (Past Participle) + ...

• Aktif: The photographer was taking pictures of us.
  • Pasif: Pictures were being taken of us by the photographer.
    Foto-foto kami sedang diambil oleh fotografer tersebut.
• Aktif: While they were repairing the bridge, traffic was bad.
  • Pasif: While the bridge was being repaired, traffic was bad.
    Ketika jembatan sedang diperbaiki, lalu lintas macet parah.

3. Pasif pada Past Perfect Tense#

Kita menggunakan bentuk pasif past perfect untuk menunjukkan bahwa suatu tindakan pasif telah selesai dilakukan sebelum tindakan masa lampau lainnya terjadi.

Rumus: Subject + had + been + Verb 3 (Past Participle) + ...

• Aktif: The chef had prepared the food before the guests arrived.
  • Pasif: The food had been prepared by the chef before the guests arrived.
    Makanan telah disiapkan oleh koki sebelum tamu-tamu datang.
• Aktif: Fire had destroyed the building before the firefighters got there.
  • Pasif: The building had been destroyed by fire before the firefighters got there.
    Gedung itu telah hancur oleh api sebelum petugas pemadam kebakaran tiba di sana.

4. Past Perfect Continuous dalam Bentuk Pasif (Sangat Jarang/Janggal)#

Sama seperti present perfect continuous, secara teoritis kita dapat membentuk kalimat pasif untuk tense Past Perfect Continuous.

Rumus: Subject + had + been + being + Verb 3 (Past Participle) + ...

• Aktif: They had been painting the wall for hours before I arrived.
  • Pasif: The wall had been being painted for hours before I arrived.

Mengapa Struktur Ini Dihindari?

Karena kombinasi kata “had been being” terdengar sangat berulang dan sulit untuk diucapkan secara alami, struktur ini hampir selalu dihindari dalam bahasa Inggris lisan maupun tulisan.

Cara Mengatasinya (Parafrase)

Pilih salah satu dari alternatif berikut:

1. Gunakan Kalimat Aktif: Tetap gunakan kalimat aktif (contoh: They had been painting the wall for hours).
2. Gunakan Past Continuous Passive: Sederhanakan bentuknya menjadi past continuous pasif (contoh: The wall was being painted when I arrived).
